BROWSERS & SETTINGS
  • This site is optimized for Netscape 4 and later, IE 5 and later, and Opera 7 and later, but we try to make it work with any browser. For an optimal experience, the following browser features should be enabled: auto-loading of images, JavaScript, Java, caching, and "automatic" page checking. (That was the abridged version; for further guidance, read on.)

  • The most important browser setting is the one that ensures that you are getting the current version of the page. If you visit the main page on a Monday, and then again on Tuesday, your browser may decide to show you Monday's version again, stored on your hard drive, instead of Tuesday's version. If you suspect that this has happened, hit your browser's "reload" or "refresh" button while holding down the "Crtl," "Alt" and "Shift" keys on your keyboard; that should give you the current page. But that's just the temporary quick fix. To keep the problem for recurring, do this:
  • You should enable your browser's disk and memory caches, particularly if you are loading images. This will prevent you from having to download the same common elements over and over again as you move from page to page. (Caching is enabled by default in all browsers.)
    • In Netscape, click "Edit," then "Preferences..." Then click the plus mark next to "Advanced" and then click "Cache." What you see should look something like this. "Memory cache" and "Disk cache" should be set at numbers greater than zero, but preferably at least 512 Kbytes for memory and 1024 Kbytes for disk.
    • In Internet Explorer, click "Tools," then "Internet Options," and then the "Settings" button under "Temporary Internet files." You should see somthing like this. Under "Amount of disk space to use," just make sure it is some number greater than zero.

  • JavaScript must be enabled if you want to take advantage of the full functionality of the site menus. JavaScript is enabled by default in most browsers.
    • In Netscape, click "Edit," then "Preferences..." and then "Advanced." You should see something like this. Check the box beside "Enable JavaScript."
    • In Internet Explorer, JavaScript apparently is always enabled. I can find no way to turn it on and off.

SPECIAL DOODADS
  • Countdown clock. JavaScript must be enabled. Keep in mind that the clock is only as accurate as your computer's clock. Make sure the time, date and time zone are set correctly on your machine. If they are, the countdown clock should be accurate no matter where in the world you are. (But beware that some versions of Netscape 3 will give an incorrect time, usually off by exactly one hour, even if your clock settings are correct. Also, some computers on some office networks will show an incorrect countdown regardless of the individual computer's clock settings.)

On some browsers (notably Netscape 4.x and Opera), a Java version of the clock (not the same as JavaScript) is used. To enable Java, follow steps similar to those for enabling JavaScript.

  • Site menu. The "Football" menu on the left side of the page and the "Bulletin board" menu at the top should look something like this when your mouse passes over them. However, the menus won't work if:
    • JavaScript is not enabled in your browser (see above).
    • You try to use the menus before the page is finished loading. That is the biggest hold-up: For some reason the menus won't work until all the other elements on the page are in place. When the menus themselves are loading, you may see this in your browser's status window. When the menus are ready, the status window may look like this. The info does not show up in the status windows of some browsers, notably Netscape 6.
    • You are using some browser other than Netscape 4.x or 6 (any platform), Internet Explorer 4.x or newer for Win95/98/Me/NT/2000, Opera 7 or newer, or the latest non-beta Mozilla release. (The menus are designed to work in Internet Explorer 5.x for Mac but causes problems, so I have tried to deactivate the menus for that browser.) The menus do not yet work in Opera 5 but may one day soon.
