Nebraska wound up spring football practice on a rousing, bomb-filled note. The Whites scored in the final minute with the aid of a pass interference call to pull out a 26-24 victory over the Reds. After the hitting concluded, Coach Bob Devaney commented: "I think this was one of our better offensive showings of the spring. We had general improvement on offense all the way around this spring, and I think we made progress in finding replacements for the middle of our defensive line. Three of the six TD plays of the day were from over 50 yards out, prompting Devaney to observe: "That's something we didn't have last year — the home run threat." Particularly outstanding was the pass receiving of Tom Penny, Rex Lowe, Guy Ingles and Larry Frost; the running of Mike Green and Joe Orduna; the kicking of Paul Rogers; and the overall play of the offensive lines and the defensive backfields. After watching the receivers haul in 22 passes for 462 yards, end coach Tom Osborne commented: "I think our receivers will be as good as those on any team we meet." Lowe caught a 66-yard TD pass, while Penney was on the TD end of a 71-yard cannon shot from Frank Patrick, who took up where he left off last fall as the Big 8's premium passer: 11 for 28 for 216 yards. Green blew around left end for 54 yards and a TD and Orduna got things gong with a 26-yard dash. Rogers gave promise of a fine field goal threat by booting 3-pointers from 37 and 49 yards out.  |
