Nebraska's Black Shirts locked horns with Oklahoma State's wishbone offense, and the Huskers came out a 7-3 winner before 76,476 in Memorial Stadium.
Thanks to the Husker defensive effort, fullback Tony Davis' four-yard scoring run in the third quarter was all Nebraska needed to win. The Cowboys' only score came with 12:01 left in the game when Abby Daigle booted a 32-yard field goal.
NU's defensive hero was cornerback Ardell Johnson. The senior from Chillicothe, Mo., was in on six tackles, but more importantly recovered a Cowboy fumble and intercepted a pass to stop potential OSU scoring drives. Johnson also blocked an OSU field goal attempt.
Other defensive standouts for Nebraska were linebacker Tom Ruud, 18 total tackles; middle guard John Lee, 11 total tackles; and defensive end Bob Martin, 10 total tackles.
Although the Huskers did a fine defensive job against OSU, Cowboy fullback George Palmer gave the Huskers fits. He gained 120 yards on 27 carries before he was injured in the fourth quarter.
