Nebraska raised its Kickoff Classic record to 3-0 in beating West
Virginia 31-0 in the first-ever game between the schools.
Husker quarterback Tommie Frazier, the game's MVP,
rushed 12 times for 130 yards, including a record three touchdown runs of
25, 27 and 42 yards. He threw for 100 yards, completing eight of 16 passes.
NU I-back Lawrence Phillips reached 100 yards rushing
on the first play of the second half and finished with 126 yards on 24 carries.
NU finished with 368 yards rushing to West Virginia's 89.
NU's defense had eight sacks, held West Virginia
to eight yards rushing and gave up only nine first downs. The Mountaineers'
most effective weapon was punter Todd Sauerbrun, who boomed a record 90-yard
punt and averaged 60.1 yards on nine tries.
