Huskers subdue ’Cats in 800th program win

Nebraska controlled Kansas State from start to finish with a strong defense and a powerful running game on its way to a 21-3 road win.

With the victory, the Huskers became just the fourth college football program to reach the 800-win plateau, joining Michigan, Notre Dame and Texas.

Nebraska set the tone on the game’s opening drive by marching 80 yards in nine plays to take a 7-0 lead. The touchdown came on a fake field goal when holder Jake Wesch connected with tight end Hunter Teafatiller on a 17-yard pass.

Another 80-yard drive made it 14-0 game four minutes into the second quarter. Meanwhile, the Blackshirt defense was dominating, allowing just one snap by the Wildcats in Nebraska territory in the first half — a 54-yard field goal try as time expired.

Linebacker Stewart Bradley led Nebraska’s defense with 10 tackles. Sophomore defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh wreaked havoc with an interception, a quarterback sack and two other unassisted tackles.

The Blackshirts held Kansas State to just 22 rushing yards, with 38 yards coming on a fake punt. KSU quarterback Josh Freeman was sacked four times for 35 yards in losses.

Commentary

Shatel

Don't look now, but Callahan's pound-the-rock philosophy is leading the way again.

McKeever

By halftime Kansas State’s offense had been made one-dimensional.

Leever

All told, a gnarly win against a generally annoying purple opponent.

Barfknecht

The Big Red's effort left the Purple People green with envy.

Husker Dan

Considering where the Husker program was a year ago or - gasp! - two years ago, the Huskers have made drastic improvements.
