No. 1 Trojans trample Huskers in prime time

No. 1 USC reeled off 35 straight points in the second and third quarters to claim a 49-31 victory over No. 14 Nebraska.

Nebraska took a 10-7 lead on Alex Henery’s 37-yard field goal with 9:04 left in the second quarter. On the ensuing kickoff, USC benefited from a fortuitous bounce when Rickey Thenarse stripped USC return man Vincent Joseph of the football in front of the USC sideline and the ball flew more than 10 yards toward the middle of the field. Trojan Malcolm Smith scooped up the ball and raced 31 yards down the Nebraska sideline before being upended at the NU 45.

Josephvsuffered a bruised larnyx on the play and was carried off the field and taken to a hospital. After the extended delay, USC appeared to regroup and attack the Huskers on both sides of the ball with greater energy.

The Trojans wasted little time in regaining the lead, pounding the ball on five straight rushing plays covering 45 yards capped by Stanley Havili’s two-yard touchdown run with 6:50 remaining in the half.

Commentary

Colonel Mustard

This game does not make or break our season, but it is definitely a benchmark.

So, Nebraska still awaits its ‘breakthrough’ win. I thought this might be the Huskers’ big chance. I really did.

We looked exactly like a team playing with four new starters along the defensive line, plus a new D-line coach.

Douglass

What USC accomplished with the ground game looked eerily similar to the way Colorado gashed the Blackshirts back in 2001.

So in Year Four of the Callahan Experiment (it’s not the Callahan Era yet, despite his two-year contract extension), where should the bar be set?

It’s hard to imagine Nebraska will see a team anywhere close as talented as the Men of Troy the rest of this season.

These are programs going in different directions. The Huskers are yesterday’s team.

Forget the caliber, just call the Trojans cocked and loaded — again.

It is a statement that surely will be heard this week in places like Norman and Gainesville and Baton Rouge. Somebody else No. 1?

“Big Red,” instead of a cornpone cheer today, is the color of Nebraska embarrassment.

The Trojans needed to come into a football shrine and show a team personality, and they did. Arm-tacklers, beware.
