Huskers defeat Texas A&M
College Station, Texas -- Laura Pilakowski posted her fourth double-double of the season to lead the No. 2 Nebraska volleyball team to a 25-30, 30-24, 31-29, 30-24, victory over 17th-ranked Texas A&M Sunday afternoon at the G. Rollie White Coliseum. Pilakowski produced 16 kills and 17 digs, both season-high totals, to help the Huskers improve to 15-1 overall and 8-0 in the Big 12 Conference.

Nancy Metcalf also posted 16 kills, and Jenny Kropp had 12 while committing just one error on 19 attacks for a .579 hitting percentage. Kropp also recorded a match-high eight blocks for the Huskers, who out-blocked A&M 19-6.

Erin Lechler notched 20 kills for Texas A&M, which fell to 12-3 overall and 5-2 in the league.

“This was a good win for us,” NU Coach John Cook said. “We did not play our best volleyball, but I was really proud of our team. After losing that first game, we came out and found a way to win playing A&M’s quick-tempo style of volleyball.”

Texas A&M broke the Huskers’ 36 game-winning streak with a 30-25 win in game one. The loss was NU’s first since Sept. 1 at Long Beach State. Nebraska hit a season-low .103 and never led in game one, and the Huskers trailed by as many as eight points midway through the period. NU pulled within three as Schrad reeled off four straight points from behind the service line, including an ace, to make it 19-16, A&M. But the Aggies remained in control and led 29-23 after the Huskers were called for being out of rotation and Schrad committed an attack error. NU held Texas A&M off twice with kills by Holmquist to make it 29-25, A&M, but the Aggies took the game on the next rally after Melissa Munsch’s fourth kill of the game.

Nebraska bounced back in game two, breaking a 6-6 tie with back-to-back kills by Metcalf, and another by Holmquist. The Huskers never trailed after that. Consecutive blocks by Kropp and Pilakowski and Kropp and Cepero gave the Huskers a 24-16 lead, when they opened to 28-21 with another block by Kropp. The Aggies capitalized on two NU errors to pull within five, but Kropp answered with her fifth kill of the game to force a game-point situation. Schrad then secured the 30-24, second-game victory with a tip that fell just behind the A&M blockers. The Huskers hit .366 in game two.

Texas A&M led 11-4 in game three after three ace serves by A.D. Achilefu. But the Huskers outscored A&M 7-1 to pull within one. Nebraska tied it at 14, and then again at 16, as kills by Pilakowski accounted for four points in the run. The Huskers took their first lead since the early moments of the game when Holmquist slammed a kill to make it 23-22, but A&M answered with a kill by Munsch to tie it once again.

Holmquist came back with another kill to tie it at 24, and Nebraska led by two after an attack error by A&M and a kill by Pilakowski. The squads exchanged points twice before the Aggies tied it at 28 with back-to-back kills by Mount. Achilefu made it 29-28, A&M, on the ensuing rally, pounding a kill down on the Nebraska 10-foot line. Metcalf tied it once against at 29 with a kill, and an attack error by Mount made it 30-29 Nebraska. Holmquist slammed a kill on the next play to give the Huskers the 31-29, third-game win.

Nebraska controlled the entire fourth game. NU led 16-10 following back-to-back blocks by Holmquist and Pilakowski and Holmquist and Cepero. The Huskers tied their largest lead of the game after a kill by Schrad slammed down an Aggie overpass to make it 20-15. A 26-21, Nebraska lead disappeared to 26-24 after a service ace by Munsch. Kropp made it 27-24 with a kill, and the squads exchanged points before a kill by Pilakowski forced a game-point situation for NU. Schrad then blocked Erin Lechler for the 30-24 fourth-game win and the match.

Nebraska returns to action Wednesday, Oct. 17, when it plays host to Texas (9-6, 4-4) at the NU Coliseum. The 7 p.m. match will be televised live by NETV.
