Huskers sweep No. 22 Santa Clara

Lincoln, NE -- Senior setter Greichaly Cepero played an impressive all-around game to lead the No. 4 Nebraska volleyball team to a 30-13, 30-15, 30-22 victory over Alabama before 4,030 fans at the NU Coliseum Saturday morning. Cepero posted a season-best eight kills on a career-high .889 hitting percentage while notching three service aces and three blocks.

The Dorado, Puerto Rico native also tallied 28 assists to lead the Huskers to a season-high .475 hitting percentage. Six of the eight NU players who attempted a kill hit .400 or better under Cepero’s direction, and no Husker hit less than .333.

Three other Huskers matched Cepero’s kill total. Senior middle blocker Amber Holmquist posted eight kills on a .417 hitting percentage while adding a match-high seven blocks; freshman outside hitter Jennifer Saleaumua had eight kills while swinging at a .412 clip, and senior outside hitter Laura Pilakowski recorded eight kills and hit .350.

Defensively, Nebraska out-blocked the Crimson Tide 12-2. NU also produced 33 digs to Alabama’s 25.

“We’re really proud of our volleyball team,” NU Coach John Cook said. “I love the way they came out at 10 in the morning, focused, and they wanted to play well. It was really exciting to see that. It’s tough to play this early in the morning; it’s out of our normal routine. We were also really pleased that we had a full house today, the first time we’ve sold out this early. That was really exciting for our players and we’re very grateful for our fans.”

With the win, Nebraska improved to 6-1 on the season. The Huskers will continue US Bank/Arby’s tournament action later today when they face Michigan at 5 p.m. Alabama, which fell to 6-3, will play No. 22 Santa Clara at 7 p.m. at the NU Coliseum.

“If they sell out at 10 a.m. on a Saturday morning, then they have the best fans in the nation,” Alabama Coach Judy Green said. “We’ve never played in front of a crowd this big—but we wanted the experience.”
