Sept. 21, 2002 Huskers sweep Longhorns Lincoln, NE -- Amber Holmquist had 11 kills and became Nebraska’s all-time blocks leader, as the fifth-ranked Huskers swept No. 24 Texas, 30-15, 30-24, 30-23 in front of a sellout crowd of 4,194 at the NU Coliseum Saturday evening. Holmquist had 11 kills and eight blocks to pace the Big Red attack, becoming NU’s passing Stephanie Thater’s school record of 591 career blocks set from 1989 to 1991. Holmquist led a stifling Big Red defense, holding Texas to a .092 hitting percentage, only the second time UT had hit under .200 in a match all year. NU dominated the net, out-blocking the Longhorns, 13-2, in recording their sixth straight win over Texas, dating back to 1999. "Nebraska is probably the best blocking team in the country," Texas Coach Jerritt Elliott said, "and Amber Holmquist is the best blocker in Nebraska's history. We can't let players like her get out of our state and play on other teams. Then combine Amber's block with Greichaly Cepero's, and that's tough combination." A 6-foot-4 middle blocker from Houston, Texas, Holmquist did not commit an error in 17 attempts in hitting a team-high .647 in the win. She was one of three Huskers in double-figure kills as Nebraska hit .396 - its second-highest total of the season, in the victory. Outside hitters Laura Pilakowski (Columbus, Neb.) and Anna Schrad (Lincoln, Neb.) chipped in 13 and 10 kills, respectively, as Nebraska committed just 12 hitting errors. All-American Greichaly Cepero (Dorado, P.R.) added 37 assists and had six kills in 10 attempts, helping the Huskers’ hit over .400 in games one and three, as the Huskers posted their 50th consecutive home win. "When it's showtime, our players know how to step up," NU Coach John Cook said. "I think tonight was the best match I've seen Greicha set since 2000. Tonight was a huge step forward to being an NCAA Final Four team and being a national championship contender." Mira Topic paced the Longhorns, who dropped to 8-3 and 0-2 in the Big 12, with 12 kills, while Kathy Hahn added 10 kills in the losing effort for the Longhorns. The Huskers return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 25, when the Huskers travel to Lubbock, Texas, to take on Texas Tech, beginning at 7 p.m. The match will be available on the Pinnacle Sports Network and also on the Internet at Huskers.com.
