Huskers cruise past Creighton

Lincoln, NE -- A season-high crowd of 8,627 was on hand at the Bob Devaney Sports Center for the fifth-ranked Huskers’ 30-11, 30-15, 30-14 win over Creighton Sunday afternoon in the second match of the Nebraska Volleyball Classic. The crowd was the NCAA’s second largest this season, trailing only the 9,495 fans at the Hawaii-Ohio State match Aug. 30.

“The Huskers were really excited for this type of an environment,” NU Head Coach John Cook said. “There was a lot of energy in this building today. It was a lot of fun. The environment psyched them up a lot, and I think it did the opposite for Creighton. They have a lot of young players and I think that they were in a little bit of awe out there today.”

The Huskers (11-1), who normally play at the 4,030-seat NU Coliseum, were led by senior outside hitter Laura Pilakowski, who totaled 11 kills on a .556 hitting percentage with two service aces and five blocks. Freshman outside hitter Jennifer Saleaumua added nine kills on a .444 hitting percentage. Sophomore outside hitter Ally Rebholz recorded eight digs and six kills while swinging at a .500 clip in her first extensive action of the season after being sidelined by an ankle injury.

Senior setter Greichaly Cepero produced six kills and 33 assists while leading NU to a .464 hitting percentage. Every Nebraska player who attempted a kill hit over .350.

Defensively, NU out-blocked Creighton 14-3 and held the Bluejays to minus -.068 at the net. Sarah Beulke led Creighton (1-11) with seven kills.
