Oct. 19, 2002 Huskers roll past Baylor Lincoln, NE -- Seniors Amber Holmquist and Laura Pilakowski combined for 30 kills on a .675 hitting percentage Saturday night to lead the No. 4 Nebraska volleyball team to a 30-16, 30-23, 30-19, win over Baylor before 4,086 fans at the NU Coliseum. Holmquist committed just one error on 20 attacks for a season-best .700 hitting percentage, while Pilakowski also posted 15 kills on 20 attacks, erring twice for a .650 clip. The senior duo set the tone for one of NU’s best offensive nights of the season. Six Huskers had at least five kills, and five NU players hit over .400 under the direction of senior setter Greichaly Cepero, who was nearly perfect in her return to the court after a one-match suspension. Cepero notched 45 assists in leading the Huskers to a .472 hitting percentage, their second-highest mark of 2002. With the win, the Huskers improved to 17-1 overall and 9-0 in the Big 12 Conference. "It’s amazing that we had as many serving errors as attack errors tonight," NU Coach John Cook said. "Greichaly came out tonight and set well. Our passing and ball handling was exceptional tonight, that’s why we see these kind of stats. "And I think that really, this was a week of reflection for us with everything that happened. These players realized what a unique experience this is, and they came out focused and played with emotion." Nebraska raced to a 16-6 lead in game one behind five kills from Holmquist and three from Pilakowski. The Huskers maintained at least an eight-point lead the rest of the way. NU ended game with with four straight kills, and freshman Jennifer Saleaumua served the final five points in the 30-16 win. Nebraska hit .500 in game one while holding the Bears to a .067 clip. Baylor bounced back in game two, and led most of the way early, building a 15-12 advantage. But Nebraska scored 10 of the next 11 points to open a 22-17 lead. Holmquist, Pilakowski and redshirt freshman middle blocker Melissa Elmer each accounted for two kills down the stretch, as NU took the second game, 30-23. In game three, the Bears again played Nebraska close early. With a 15-14 lead, Nebraska out-scored Baylor 11-3 in a run that included three kills from sophomore reserve outside hitter Ally Rebholz. Pilakowski pounded her 15th kill of the match on game point to secure a 30-19, third-game win. Tisha Schwartz tallied 16 kills but hit just .163 for Baylor, which fell to 8-11 overall and 2-7 in the Big 12. Nebraska returns to action Wednesday, Oct. 23, when it travels to Lawrence, Kan., to take on the Jayhawks in a 7 p.m. match.
