Huskers sweep Kansas

Lawrence, KS -- Senior middle blocker Amber Holmquist pounded 14 kills on a .458 hitting percentage Wednesday night to lead the No. 4 Nebraska volleyball team to a 30-22, 30-21, 30-20, victory at Kansas. Holmquist also tallied six blocks, as the Huskers improved to 18-1 overall and 10-0 in the Big 12 Conference.

Freshman right side hitter Jennifer Saleuamua added 11 kills for Nebraska while swinging at a .450 clip. With a match-high 12 digs, Saleaumua produced her first double-double of the season. Freshman middle blocker Melissa Elmer totaled six blocks for NU, which out-blocked the Jayhawks 13-6.

In game one, Nebraska took a 25-19 lead after Elmer and Cepero combined for back-to-back blocks of KU junior outside hitter Sarah Rome. The Jayhawks cut NU’s advantage to three with the help of two Nebraska hitting errors and a serving error, but the Huskers closed the game with a 5-0 run. Saleaumua notched two kills during that span, including the game-winning strike.

In game two, the Huskers led by five after an ace serve by Cepero. However, Kansas scored five of the next six points to pull within one. Saleaumua stopped the KU run with a kill, and Elmer served four straight points to open Nebraska’s advantage to 26-20. Anna Schrad wrapped up a 30-21, second-game win with a kill.

Nebraska cruised to a 30-20 Win in game three. NU took a 10-3 lead after Jenae Dowling served five straight points, and the Huskers remained in control the rest of the way. NU led 20-11 after a kill by Elmer, and the Huskers secured the third-game victory and the match on a kill by sophomore outside hitter Ally Rebholz.

Rome recorded a team-high 10 kills for Kansas, which hit just .068 against the Nebraska defense. With the loss, KU fell to 14-5 overall and 5-5 in the league.

The Huskers return to action Saturday, Oct. 26, when they play host to Texas A&M at 3 p.m. at the NU Coliseum. The match will be televised live on NETV and can also be heard on B107.3 FM in Lincoln and Omaha.
