Huskers sweep A&M

Lincoln, NE -- Amber Holmquist and Anna Schrad combined for 26 kills to lead the No. 4 Nebraska volleyball team to a 30-28, 30-26, 30-20 win over Texas A&M before 4,084 fans at the NU Coliseum Saturday afternoon. Holmquist pounded 13 kills on a .550 hitting percentage to go with three blocks, while Schrad also tallied 13 kills, hit .423 and recorded eight digs.

With the victory, Nebraska improved to 19-1 overall and 11-0 in the Big 12 and extending their nation-leading home winning streak to 55. Texas A&M fell to 13-7 overall and 5-6 in the Big 12.

“I had an instinct that Texas A&M would come in here and play very well, and they did,” Husker Coach John Cook said. “They hit .425 in game one and came out very hot. We played with them offensively, but that is not Nebraska volleyball – especially at home. We want to come out and suffocate our opponents with the block. But we made some nice adjustments in game two.

“We haven’t had a lot of games at home where the other team battles us point for point until the end. So that we good for us to get tested.”

Nebraska led 19-15 in the first game before A&M scored four of the next five points to pull within on. But Schrad stopped the run with a kill, and Melissa Elmer served four straight points to give NU a 24-19 advantage. The Huskers widened the lead to 28-22 after a kill by Holmquist, but the Aggies wouldn’t quit. A.D. Achilefu produced back-to-back kills and a block to cut the lead to three. Pilakowski pounded a kill to force a game point situation, but the Aggies held NU off three times with a kill by Laura Jones and two more from Achilefu. NU freshman Jennifer Saleaumua finally secured a 30-28 first-game victory for NU with her fifth kill of the game.

The Huskers again struggled to put the game away in the second period, missing two straight game-point opportunities before taking a 30-26 win on Schrad’s 10th kill of the match.

Nebraska controlled the entire game three. NU led 19-10 after a kill by Elmer, who served the last three points of the match. Schrad again notched a game-winning kill to give NU a 30-20 victory and the match.

NU setter Greichaly Cepero led the Huskers to a .328 hitting percentage, totaling 40 assists, 10 digs, three blocks and four kills while hitting at a .571 clip.

The Huskers return to action Wednesday, Oct. 30, when they travel to Boulder, Colo., for an 8 p.m. match with the Buffaloes.
