Huskers sweep Iowa State

Lincoln -- Senior setter Greichaly Cepero produced 40 assists and a season-high 11 kills Wednesday night to lead the No. 5 Nebraska volleyball team to a 30-9, 30-17, 30-19 win over Iowa State before 4,032 fans at the NU Coliseum. Cepero did not commit an error in 19 attacks, swinging for a .579 hitting percentage while adding six blocks.

With the victory, the Huskers improved to 23-1 overall and 15-0 in the Big 12 Conference.

“I was very pleased with the way we played in game one,” NU Coach John Cook said. “We were sharp and enthused; it was almost a perfect game in every way. Throughout the match, we put Greicha in a situation to do whatever she wanted offensively. That was a perfect example of what we’ve been working on this week in practice.”

Cepero spread the offense, and the Huskers scored at will. NU hit .413 under Cepero’s direction, marking the fourth time this season that they have hit over .400 in a match. Six of the eight Nebraska players that attempted a kill hit over .375, and four players with at least four kills hit over .500. Senior middle blocker Amber Holmquist pounded eight kills on a .500 hitting percentage in two games. Senior outside hitter Laura Pilakowski also played two games and posted eight kills while swinging at a .625 clip.

NU received impressive performances off the bench from sophomore outside hitter Ally Rebholz and junior middle blocker Sara Westling. Rebholz recorded a season-high seven kills and did not commit an error in 12 attacks for a .583 hitting percentage, and Westling hit .375 and totaled five kills.

“The other positives tonight were seeing Ally Rebholz and Sara Westling come in and play well,” Cook said. “I thought we played well even though we mixed up the lineups. We definitely created that energy.”

Defensively, NU out-blocked Iowa State 11-0 and held the Cyclones to a minus -.051 hitting percentage, marking the second time this season that it has held an opponent to a negative mark.

Renae Pruess had eight kills for Iowa State, which fell to 10-18 overall and 1-15 in the Big 12.

Nebraska returns to action Saturday when it plays host to Oklahoma at 7 p.m. at the NU Coliseum. The match will be broadcast live on B107.3 FM and the Nebraska Volleyball Network.
