Nov. 30, 2002 Huskers sweep K-State to finish regular season Lincoln, NE -- Senior middle blocker Amber Holmquist produced 13 block assists to break the Big 12 Conference record for block assists in a three-game match while leading the No. 5 Nebraska volleyball team to a 30-20, 30-21, 30-19 win over No. 22 Kansas State Saturday night at the NU Coliseum. With the win, Nebraska finished the regular season with a 28-1 overall record and a 20-0 Big 12 mark. The Huskers posted their third-straight undefeated conference season and extended their Big 12 winning streak to 70 matches. The Huskers, winners of four straight Big 12 crowns, will learn of their postseason fate Sunday at 8 p.m. when ESPNEWS airs the NCAA volleyball tournament selection show. “I think this team has been waiting for big matches and for the NCAA Tournament,” NU Coach John Cook said. “They will be energized by it. They want to win the national championship. Our last six games have been so solid. I can’t think of any skill that we didn’t do well the entire game. We clinched the Big 12 title last week, so we said Missouri and Kansas State would be the start of our final run. We’re showing that we’re ready.” On senior night, Holmquist led NU to a season-high 20.5 blocks against the Wildcats and also tied her own conference record for total blocks in a three-game match. Senior setter Greichaly Cepero posted 35 assists in leading NU to a .331 hitting percentage. She also tallied six kills, two service aces, eight digs and eight blocks. Senior outside hitter Laura Pilakowski led both teams with 12 kills and hit .296, while senior libero Lindsay Wischmeier added seven digs. “There are so many memories here, and I will miss playing at the Coliseum so much,” Pilakowski said. “It hasn’t hit me that we won’t be playing here next year. We just have to cherish what is left and play for each other during the NCAA Tournament.” The seniors have compiled a 120-9 record during their four seasons at NU. They have won four Big 12 championships and have traveled to the NCAA Final Four twice, winning the national title in 2002. The seniors have combined for five AVCA All-America honors, three Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-America awards, seven All-Big 12 awards and 12 Academic All-Big 12 honors. “I don’t know if what they have accomplished will ever be duplicated here,” Cook said. “At some point it will hit me, everything that they’ve done for this program. But it probably won’t be until next year when they’re gone.” Lauren Goehring recorded 10 kills and hit .304 for Kansas State, which finishes the regular season with a 20-8 overall record and a 16-4 mark in the Big 12
